With less time up your sleeve for elaborate decorations, we’ve curated five DIY ideas that will help you finesse your home with finishing touches, to make it sparkle extra bright this holiday season.

Give your table decor a natural touch

Level up your table setting by weaving in pieces of beautiful green foliage such as gum leaves, bottlebrush or classic Christmas conifer from Kmart. Use it in the middle of the table as a statement centrepiece or scattered around glasses, candles and any food dishes.

Alternatively, break the foliage down into smaller pieces that can be placed carefully on top of a folded napkin on each plate. The added green will bring warmth to your home and for that extra dose of festive flare, tie the napkin and foliage together with some twine and a handwritten table place card for each guest.

Illuminate your space with candle arrangements

One of the easiest ways to create some Christmas magic is to scatter candles throughout your home. Choose a colour scheme (red, gold, white, green and silver are our Christmas favourites!) and find a variety of different sized candles Kmart to experiment and style with.

Make your candles more impressive by wrapping beautiful Christmas ribbon directly around them (keep these ones at the dinner table so you can keep an eye on them), or to take it one step further, place some sweet-smelling cinnamon sticks around the candle before adding the ribbon second. For an even more festive look, float smaller candles inside clear mason jars filled with water and add smaller decorative objects such as a piece of foliage or some cranberries for that final touch.

Engage the senses with festive fragrances

Go beyond what you can see with your eyes this holiday season and explore items that engage your senses with an array of decorative Christmas scents.

Use essential oil diffusers Kmart to infuse your home in holiday fragrances that will greet guests as soon as they walk through the door. Consider scents like peppermint, cinnamon, pine or nutmeg that represent all the elements of Christmas we know and love.

Smells are widely known to evoke memories, so your nearest and dearest will be reminded of Christmas moments together well beyond the holiday season and for years to come.

Display ornaments differently

Christmas ornaments such as patterned baubles in your colour scheme of choice can really assist in creating that festive feel. These don’t need to just be used on the tree. Think outside the box, by placing them in new locations across the home for little pieces of festive cheer.

Find baubles of all different shapes, colours and patterns from Kmart to place across the home. Try adding them to large glass vases for a bigger statement or use them as the final stopper on a row of books. Have them peeping out of slightly opened drawers or slip them over the backs of each chair with some festive string.

Try a new type of Christmas tree

If you haven’t had a chance to pick up the all-important Christmas tree, or you’re lacking the space for something large scale, there are many alternatives you can try. You could pick up a wooden Scandi, driftwood or LED light tree from. Alternatively, you can make your own garden-inspired take on the classic pine!

Pick a selection of succulents from (don’t forget the festive pot!) and a small wire Christmas tree from Kmart. Simply line the inside of the wire frame with breathable fabric and fill it with Sphagnum moss. Then simply upturn your frame into the pot, cut small incisions in the fabric and insert your succulent cuttings so the entire surface of your tree is a flourishing garden. Drape same lights and miniature baubles around the outside to give it a final festive touch.

As you see their faces light up with your last-minute decorations, be sure to take a snap of the special day. Share your stylish settings with us on Instagram or Facebook using the hashtag #WhereThereIsLight.
